How to make a recruiting highlight video coaches will watch

Coaches decide in the first 30 seconds. Most highlight videos lose them in the first ten.

Short answer

Keep it 2–4 minutes, put your best 5–8 clips first, identify yourself before each play, open with a title card (name, grad year, position, school, contact), skip the music intros, and host it on unlisted YouTube or Hudl.

The structure

  1. Title card: name, grad year, position, height/weight, school/club, email, phone.
  2. Best 5–8 plays, strongest first.
  3. Remaining clips grouped by skill.
  4. Optional: a short full-game or full-inning segment.

What to cut

  • Long intros and slow-motion replays.
  • Clips where you're hard to find.
  • Anything older than a year if you have newer film.
  • Plays that don't show a skill your position needs.

Make yourself easy to find

Use a spot shadow or arrow for a second before each play. If a coach has to guess which player you are, they'll close the tab.

Hosting and sharing

Unlisted YouTube and Hudl both work. Put the link in the first two lines of every email, not as an attachment.
